On Previous posts relating to uninsured vehicle stops we have conducted we have noticed some negative comments, some stating that these stops are 'easy pickings' or asking 'haven't we got anything better to do? ' Well our answer to this is simple- Road Safety is a Neighbourhood priority in the area, priorities are set each quarter and are based on feed back from the community and local statistics. Community feed back puts Road safety frequently as one of the highest issues reported to us in person, at events and in answers to our community voice surveys, further to this, the statistics below speak for them selves. https://orlo.uk/IznV6
The Statistics:- Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) has said, based on claims from over 26,000 victims each year. Every day, at least one person is so seriously injured by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver that they need life-long care and every week, at least one person is killed by an uninsured driver, according to the bureau.
Pc Boniface - "From collisions that we attend being Fatal, Serious, Minor injury or damage only, uninsured drivers will likely fail to stop and leave the scene. We generally find that drivers who fail to insure their vehicles often have a carefree approach to other offences many stopped for no insurance are frequently found to be non-licence holders and or fail to maintain their vehicle through the MOT system many of which see vehicles in dangerous conditions. Further to this an alarming amount we have stopped also have failed either drink or drug driving tests which always leads to an arrest. This demonstrates their further contempt for other road users in our community."
